Hubei is rich in species of creatures. There are over 700 species of animals in Hubei, accounting for 1/4 of the total number in China. Among them, more than 50 species are rare animals under the state regulations for protection, including Yangtze River dolphins, golden-haired monkeys, black finless porpoises, giant salamanders, viverra zibetha and viverricula indica, etc. Golden-haired monkeys living only in China are on the brink of extinction, which are under national protection for animals of first rank and belong to the second national treasure, only next to giant pandas. There are over 3700 kinds of seed plants in Hubei, among which branch and genera belong to tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate zone account for 69.1% and 55.4% respectively. Shengnongjia Area, the largest virgin forest in central China, is regarded as “the natural botanic garden with wild animals” and “Species Gene Bank”. Rare species as Pseudolarix kaemoferi Gord trees, Chinese dove trees, lacebark pines, and the “living fossil” metasequoias, and traditional Chinese medicinal herbs such as polyphylla, Balanophora involucrate, and Trillium tschonoskii all live in this region. There are 52 natural conservation areas in Hubei, among which 7 are national ecological model areas. |
