Hubei is rich in land resources. The total land area of Hubei is 18.7 million hectares, among which mountainous and hilly areas accountsfor 70% of the total, water areas accounts for 10%, and cultivated lands accounts for 20%. There are 2 million hectares of barren hills and lands (mainly in mountainous areas of west Hubei), and 200,000 hectares of water surface, which can be utilized for freshwater aquiculture. Hubei has comparable large potential in land resources exploitation.
The total amount of fresh water resource is 123.41 billion cubic meters. The per capita fresh water resource is 2070, and the fresh water consumption per hectare of the cultivated land is 2,634 cubic meters. There are 58 big reservoirs in Hubei, which hold 43.75 billion cubic meters of water.
