Overview

Alabama is in southeast US, with an area of 136,000 square kilometers and a population of 5 million. The state capital is Montgomery. The state is a powerhouse of agriculture, forestry and manufacturing, and its main industries include automobile and aircraft manufacturing, steel manufacturing, mining, and biopharmaceuticals.

Relations with Hubei

Since Hubei and Alabama twinned in 1985, the two sides have seen frequent delegation visits.

In 2005, the Alabama government held a ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of sister relations. The Alabama House of Representatives passed a resolution in support of the sister relationship with Hubei.

In 2006, Hubei Province and Alabama State signed a memorandum on friendly cooperation. In 2007, the Alabama House and Senate issued Resolution 283 to cement ties with Hubei Province.

In 2017, Mac McCutcheon, Speaker of Alabama House of Representatives, attended the Second US-China Subnational Legislatures Cooperation Forum in Hubei and signed a letter of intent on friendly cooperation between legislatures with the Standing Committee of Hubei Provincial People’s Congress. Wang Jianming, then Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Hubei Provincial People’s Congress, attended the forum in 2018 and 2019, one held in the US and one at home, during which he held talks with Mac McCutcheon. In 2019, Liu Xiaoming, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Hubei Provincial People’s Congress, visited the United States and held talks with Anthony Daniels, minority leader of Alabama House of Representatives. In March 2021, Vice Governor Zhao Haishan met with Daniels through video conference. The two sides exchanged views on deepening cooperation in automobile, economy, trade, science and technology and other fields.

Cooperation between Hubei Province and Alabama State mainly focuses on agriculture, science, and education. In 1988, Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Auburn University began cooperation in agricultural product breeding. In 2012, Hubei University of Economics and Auburn University at Montgomery jointly established a Confucius Institute.
