Overview

Galati city is the capital of Galati County, Romania, with an area of 246.4 square kilometers and a population of 249,000. It is the largest steel industry base and an important port and shipbuilding industry center in the country.

Relations with Wuhan

On August 12, 1987, Mr. Dong Shaojian, then Vice Mayor of Wuhan Municipal People’s Government, visited Galati and signed an agreement to establish sister city relationship with the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Galati and Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee. Wuhan then sent a representative to Galati.

In April 1988, then First Secretary of the Communist Party of Galati and Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee led a delegation to Wuhan. Galati agreed to introduce to Wuhan its steel, timber, furniture manufacturing technology, equipment for making fiberboard from cotton stalks and glucose processing technology. Wuhan agreed to export textiles, cotton yarn, machine tools, loose parts for recorders and other products to Galati.

In June 2009, Mr. Ye Jinsheng, then Chairman of the CPPCC Wuhan Municipal Committee, led a delegation to Galati to attend the Galati-Wuhan Economic and Trade Fair.

In June 2011, Mr. Li Xiansheng, then Executive Vice Governor of Hubei Province, led a delegation to Galati and met with Speaker of the Galati Provincial Assembly and Mayor of Galati.

In April 2014, Mr. Ruan Chengfa, then member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Wuhan Municipal Committee, visited Galati to celebrate the 27th anniversary of the establishment of sister city relationship. Mr. Ruan met with Kostin Mihalac, State Counsellor to the Prime Minister of Romania, attended the Wuhan-Galati Economic and Trade Fair and signed an agreement on cooperation between the two cities and a memorandum of cooperation between the chambers of commerce. Mr. Ruan visited the Romanian Small and Medium Enterprises Agency and the Bucharest World Trade Centre Organization, attended a meeting with Romanian SMEs and witnessed the signing of relevant cooperation agreements.

Since the onset of Covid-19 in January 2020, Mayor Inout Florin Puccinu and then Mayor Zhou Xianwang have exchanged letters of sympathy, expressing their good wishes to overcome the difficulties together. Wuhan sent Galati the Handbook of Covid-19 Prevention and Treatment and The Knowledge Center for China’s Experiences in Response to Covid-19, and provided the Directory of Medical Material Exporters in Wuhan to assist them in purchasing epidemic prevention materials on a commercial basis.
