Overview

Kiev is the capital and largest city of Ukraine. Located in the north-central part of Ukraine along the Dnipro River, it is the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. With an area of 847 square kilometers and a population of about 2.96 million in 2021, it is the seventh most populous city in Europe. Kiev has a history of more than 1,500 years and was the oldest city founded by the East Slavs. It served as the capital and center of Kievan Rus’ from the 9th to the 13th centuries, known as the “Mother of Rus’ Cities”. Kiev is also one of the 12 heroic cities of the Soviet Union.

Relations with Wuhan

Wuhan and Kiev became sister cities back in 1990, and the two cities had frequent exchanges in the early years.

The Deputy Director of Foreign Relations Bureau of Kiev City was invited to the 2018 China International Friendship Cities Conference in Wuhan. He expressed his hope for the two cities to deepen cooperation. During their stay in Wuhan, the delegation visited Hubei Provincial Museum, the East Lake and a number of foreign trade enterprises, and gained an in-depth understanding of Wuhan’s development.

In May 2019, at the invitation of Kiev City Government, Mr. Wang Xiangsheng, vice president of Wuhan Municipal People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, led a delegation to Kiev. They attended the Kiev Day and discussed cooperation with foreign affairs and cultural departments.

In July 2019, a sports delegation from Kiev participated in the 45th Wuhan International River Crossing Festival and staged impressive performance.
