Overview

Seki is in the central part of the Japanese archipelago in the middle reaches of Nagara River. The city covers an area of 102.51 square kilometers, spanning 11.8 kilometers from east to west and 13.5 kilometers from north to south with an average elevation of 56.6 meters. The population is about 92,000 (2022). The climate is mild and humid with an average annual temperature of 15℃ and an average annual precipitation of 2,018 mm. Seki is a transportation hub at the heart of Japan with abundant natural resources. Its main economic sectors are agriculture, forestry, fishery, mining, construction, manufacturing, telecommunication, transportation, wholesale, retail, finance, insurance, real estate, etc.

Relations with Huangshi

In 1986, an enterprise in Huangshi city and an enterprise in Seki, Gifu, Japan jointly established Mailyard Clothing Co., Ltd. The rapid growth of the joint venture laid a good foundation for the burgeoning friendly relations between the two cities. In April 1997, Mr. Nishimura, then Vice Mayor of Seki, led a delegation to Huangshi for a friendly visit. The two sides signed theLetter of Intent for Developing Friendly and Cooperative Relations between Huangshi and Seki. On December 1,1997, Mr. Guo Yuandong, then Vice Mayor of Huangshi, led a delegation to Seki, and signed an official agreement on concluding the sister city relationship with Mr. Akio Goto, then mayor of Seki. The relationship between the two cities has since entered a new stage. In 1998, Huangshi suffered from a once-in-a-century flood. The Seki City Council and its people launched a fundraising campaign for Huangshi. As a result, they donated 5 million along with a letter of sympathy. In February 2020, Seki donated about RMB 20,000 worth of epidemic control materials to Huangshi.
