Overview

St. Pölten is the capital of Lower Austria State with an area of 108 square kilometers and a population of 52,000. St. Pölten is famous for its baroque-style architecture. The landmark building, the City Hall, has a history of 500 years. The city’s wine industry is well developed, and tourism is also a pillar industry. The city has numerous parks, forests, lakes, sports facilities, and green areas, making it a truly pleasant city to live in.

Relations with Wuhan

The friendly exchanges between Wuhan and St. Pölten started in 1998. In September 2003, the two cities signed a friendship exchange and cooperation agreement, and on December 20, 2005, the two cities formally signed an agreement on the establishment of sister city relations by mail. St. Pölten became the 12th sister city of Wuhan.

In 2003, the two cities carried out exchanges and cooperation with economic collaboration as the priority: St. Pölten held a St. Pölten Promotion Conference in Wuhan; Wuhan and St. Pölten set up economic and trade liaison offices in each other’s city; the foreign trade, tourism, culture, and education departments of the two cities signed friendship exchange and cooperation agreements. On this basis, fruitful exchanges have been carried out in business, environmental protection, education, small town construction, and medical and healthcare.

In 2006, St. Pölten sent a government and business delegation to attend the 2006 Wuhan-Europe SME Economic Cooperation Seminar and Project Fair in Wuhan. Since 2006, leaders of Wuhan municipal people’s congress, government and committee of the CPPCC have been to St. Pölten several times and participated in major events, such as the 20th anniversary of the youngest capital city in Austria and the 850th anniversary of the founding of the city.

In 2017, then executive vice mayor of Wuhan visited St. Pölten and met with the mayor. In 2018, St. Pölten secondary school students came to Wuhan Foreign Languages School for exchange and study. In 2019, a delegation of Wuhan primary and secondary school students went to St. Pölten for an exchange program. In 2020, after the onset of the Covid-19 epidemic, mayors of both sides exchanged regards and support.
