Overview

Izhevsk is the capital city of Udmurtia, Russia. The city is an economic, cultural and educational center. It is located in the west-central part of Russia, east of the Eastern European Plain, west of the Ural Mountains, in the Volga River basin, 1129 km away from Moscow. The city has an area of 315 square kilometers and a total population of about 650,000. As an industrial city, Izhevsk is famous for high-quality steel production and well-developed machine building. It is one of the most famous manufacturers of rifle. It is reputed as home of the AK-47 as Mikhail Kalashnikov designed his famous AK-47 assault rifle in the city.

Relations with Wuhan

In May 2015 when the Expo Central China convened, Alexander Solovyov, then President of Udmurtia, led a delegation to Wuhan. The delegation and Wuhan authorities expressed their willingness to promote the exchanges and cooperation between Izhevsk and Wuhan. Through joint efforts, Wuhan and Izhevsk signed the memorandum of establishing friendly exchanges and cooperation relationship on April 22, 2016.

In June 2016, then Vice Mayor of Wuhan led a delegation to Izhevsk for a friendly visit and met with Mr. Yuri Tyurin, Mayor of the city. Both sides exchanged views on deepening friendly cooperation between the two cities.

In June 2017, the second meeting of the Council of Cooperation between the Upper and Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River and the Volga Federal District was held in Hefei of Anhui Province. During the meeting, Vice Mayor of Wuhan and Mayor of Saratov Yuri Tyurin signed an agreement on the establishment of sister city relationship.

In November 2017, Deputy Mayor of Izhevsk Sergei Strelkov came to Wuhan to attend the International Friendship Cities Forum of the 3rd Investment Promotion Conference for Fortune Global 500 and World-Renowned Foreign Companies, during which he delivered a promotion speech on Izhevsk.
