Hubei in the Limelight – A Pacesetter Riding the Tide of the Times
On the mysterious 30th parallel north,
where the four great civilizations situated around,
nestles our home province Hubei.
Sitting in China’s heartland,
Hubei covers an area of 185,900 square kilometers
and has a population of 61 million.
The Yangtze River and the Han River meet here,
nourishing the splendid Yangtze River civilization.
It was here,
some five millennia ago,
that Yan Emperor Shennong pioneered China’s farming culture.
Our ancestors explored the beauty of poetry and music.
Their achievements in bronze smelting and casting,
philosophies of Laozi and Zhuangzi,
and Wudang Taichi
added to the splendor of world cultures.
From here, the Ten-thousand-mile Tea Road,
another landmark trade route besides the Silk Road,
curves to the north before turning to Europe.
Shennongjia, also known as the “Roof of Central China”,
houses the world’s best preserved ecological community
at the middle latitudes.
Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge,
the first bridge over the Yangtze,
“turned a deep chasm into a thoroughfare”.
The Three Gorges Dam
is the largest water conservancy project in the world.
The Danjiangkou Reservoir sends clean water
to over 60 million people
in Beijing, Tianjin,
and almost two dozen cities in Hebei and Henan provinces.
General Secretary Xi Jinping has made five inspection trips to Hubei
since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012
and joined deliberations with deputies from Hubei Province during the 13th National People’s Congress,
calling on us
to build Hubei into a strategic stronghold
in the overall plan to promote the “Rise of Central China”.
Keeping his instructions in mind,
we are determined
to make Hubei
a national pacesetter in fostering a new development pattern,
a key move to apply the new development philosophy and
advance Chinese modernization here in the province.
Hubei is home to the Optics Valley of China,
the world’s largest optical communication R&D and manufacturing base.
130 institutions of higher learning
with 1.9 million college students,
30 national key laboratories,
and 3,600 plus research institutes
all together provide a strong support
to our pursuit of innovation-driven development.
We are working toward new breakthroughs in optoelectronic information,
NEVs and ICVs,
and BeiDou Navigation System,
five industries where we excel.
The building of a modern industrial system is speeding up.
Hubei is the only province
with a 1,000-plus-kilometer stretch
of the Yangtze River’s main stream.
We have always prioritized ecological conservation
and green development.
Ten major actions to ensure high-standard protection of the Yangtze
are being fully implemented.
We have adopted a concerted approach to cut carbon emissions,
expand green development,
and pursue economic growth.
As a result of these efforts,
numerous migratory birds,
and finless porpoises
call Hubei – the land of a thousand lakes – home.
The Huahu Airport in Ezhou is the world’s fourth
and Asia’s first professional air cargo hub.
A “dual hub” for passenger and cargo transport,
enabled by Huahu Airport and Wuhan Tianhe International Airport,
is taking shape in central China.
Flights from Hubei
can reach major Asian cities within four hours
and major cities on other continents
within 12 hours.
Our high-speed railway network spreads out in all directions,
cargo trains of the China (Wuhan)-Europe Railway Express thunder on the tracks,
and waterways in the Yangtze carry 10,000-ton ships directly to the ocean.
Fortune Global 500 companies investing here
in other provinces in central China.
Today’s Hubei is transforming
from a late-comer in the previous round of opening up pioneered by coastal areas
into a front-runner in the new drive for inland development.
In the wake of the once-in-a-century pandemic,
General Secretary Xi Jinping
personally directed the nationwide responses
and guided us to victory in the battle
to safeguard Hubei
and its capital Wuhan.
Emerging from the crisis stronger,
reached 5.37 trillion yuan in 2022,
ranking the 7th nationwide.
All the 5.81 million impoverished people
were lifted out of poverty as scheduled.
The development of three metropolitan areas
is a showcase of the new regional economic layout.
Our goal is to create a pleasant environment and happy life for our people
and ensure a stronger sense of fulfillment,
is truly delivered to them.
The mighty river rolls on relentlessly day and night.
Going forward, we shall never forget why we started.
Riding the tide
of the new era,
Hubei is ready
to write an even more magnificent chapter
in the drive to advance Chinese modernization.
