This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union, and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Italy. From March 19 to 23, Maurizio Rasero, President of the Province of Asti in Italy’s Piedmont Region, led a large, high-level delegation on a visit to Hubei Province.

A vibrant Italian-Chinese carnival themed “Rhythms of Yangtze & Po Rivers” was the highlight of the visit, marking a cultural climax in the mutual exchange of civilizations. The event opened with a unique Sino-Italian fashion show and featured a stunning performance of traditional Italian medieval flag-waving –– a blend of history and artistry.

On March 20, President Rasero attended and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the Cherry Blossom Viewing Business Cooperation & Fortune Global 500 Dialogue with Hubei. He remarked that Hubei has become his “second home.” In less than two years, he has visited Hubei four times, realizing a journey from mutual recognition, understanding, and trust to cooperation and mutual benefit. Looking ahead, he said Piedmont will treat Hubei as its preferred partner in China and will encourage more Italian companies to invest and grow their presence in the province.

On the morning of March 23, President Rasero joined Wuhan Mayor Sheng Yuechun and others in sounding the starting gun for the 2025 Wuhan Marathon, launching the race that saw 40,000 runners from around the world ignite the streets with passion.

Later that day, the delegation visited the famous Red Cliffs Battlefield — a historic site from the Three Kingdoms period — to watch a live performance of Battle of Red Cliffs, tasted traditional dark brick tea and snacks, enjoy a tea art demonstration, and learn about the rich history, products, and culture of tea in China.
